This information sheet is designed to assist with the identification and treatment of Hip Osteoarthritis and is suitable for both the clinician and the regular lay person.

What is it?

  • This condition refers to degeneration of the hip joint surfaces and often a loss of space between the hip and pelvic bones

What do I look for?

  • Reduction in the range of movement in the hip, especially internal rotation
  • Weakness in the surrounding hip muscles
  • Pain with walking and may lead to a limp
  • History of a previous hip injury/pathology
  • Generalised aching in the hip region that may also extend down the leg.

What causes it?

  • General wear and tear to the joint with use over the years
  • Previous injury to the hip

When do I see the physio?

  • Your physio can assess your condition and use a variety of techniques to strengthen muscle imbalances and improve joint movement.  They will provide you with an appropriate exercise and/or hydrotherapy program.
  • Improving global muscle strength can significantly improve symptoms and function. Your therapist will be able to guide you with a good exercise and strengthening program.

Braces and Supports

There are some braces and supports that can help with generalised hip pain and arthritis including;

  1. Thermoskin Hip Support
  2. Rehband QD Thermal Shorts
  3. OSSUR Hip unloader– excellent option to unload the hip joint and improve symptoms with diagnosed hip OA

Do I see my doctor?

  • Your doctor will be able to assist you with medication for your condition
  • If symptoms persist, your therapist will advise when you need to see your doctor
